The winter beauty of ‘ Yaku Jima ‘ Miscanthus grass .
'Yaku Jima' Miscanthus is a dwarf, clumping variety of the very popular Maiden Grass. This little beauty grows to be 3-4' tall and wide and is very upright and tidy. Leaf blades are 3/8" wide and arch down gracefully. It will produce buff colored fluffy blooms in August-September that sway gracefully with every breeze and contrast nicely above the striking green foliage. Winter brings on an entirely different look. The clump turns a soft wheaten color and is a real show stopper when used in mass plantings.
As with most ornamental grasses, undemanding is the word. They enjoy full sun and are extremely drought tolerant although they thrive when the soil is good and they are well watered. Maintenance is no more than cutting them back each spring to allow new, fresh growth.
What an impact a strong mass planting can bring to large expanses, to difficult areas. Even in smaller landscapes, the use of large groupings of ornamental grasses will make a BIG statement and work as such an inexpensive filler.
