The Gift of a Living Christmas Tree

Bringing greenery into the home at Christmas time is an ancient custom. In fact, older than the Christmas holiday itself! Many civilizations have used living plants to celebrate the winter solstice, the time of lengthening days, the return to the light. The Egyptians brought Date Palm fronds into their homes and temples to celebrate the Sun’s renewal. The palm’s leaves symbolized the triumph of life over death to these early people.

The Roman’s brought in potted Laurel trees into their homes. They signified good fortune

They also gave gifts of Holly and decorated their homes with it. Holly was powerful and sacred. It was often brought indoors to ward off evil spirits by catching them on the Holly’s prickly leaves as they tried to enter the home.

The earliest record of a decorated Christmas tree dates back to 1521. We carry on these time worn traditions by bringing into our modern homes the potted, living Christmas tree.

To introduce to our children, perhaps for the first time, the way things used to be done, a return to basics. To understand that by returning to that simpler way of thinking we are by no means sacrificing but, in fact, may be gaining a perspective on life that perhaps we had lost or just forgotten.
