The Beauty of Pink Muhly Grass
Pink Muhly Grass ( Muhlenbergia capillaris ) is an ornamental grass native to North America. A real preformer in a low-maintenance garden, Muhly is prized for it's billowing, delicate and profuse clouds of vibrant reddish pink plumes that create a haze of color over the thin, arching leaves of this carefree beauty. The finely textured foliage is a nice blue-green color. The blooms start in late summer and turn a buff shade in the winter continuing the visual interest. It has a nicely cascading, fountainous habit producing a clump that can reach 3-5' with bloom spikes reaching 4-5'.
Perfect especially for areas with drought issues, the ornamental grasses become even more desirable. It makes a great hedge, a border or in patio containers, even becoming a favorite in indoor arrangements because the blooms hold their color so well.
Their culture is easy ! They require full sun to light shade . While this decorative grass can handle poor soil conditions, it's preformance is greatly enhanced by planting in a richly organic, well drained soil. Plant in clumps of 3 or more to insure a stunning fall display. They look their best when on regular irrigation with a light fertilization program . They are pest and disease free too !
In late winter / early spring, before they begin to flush, cut Muhly grass back to about 12" tall. Now is the time to divide clumps if need be. Give them a light feeding with a nice balanced fertilizer, make sure they are kept moist and you will be rewarded with yet another year with these beautiful native grasses.
